Bitcoin Tumbles Amidst Surge in Wholesale Inflation
Wholesale inflation data from April revealed a significant increase in producer prices, sending shockwaves through financial markets. The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 1.4% in April from the previous month, nearly triple the estimated 0.5% growth predicted by economists polled by MarketWatch.
The annual PPI inflation rate jumped to 6%, marking its highest increase in four years, while core producer prices climbed 0.6% in April, more than double the forecasted 0.3%. The sharp rise in wholesale prices has added to concerns about inflation, particularly after Tuesday's hotter-than-expected consumer price index (CPI) data.
The effects of this inflationary pressure were felt in the cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin briefly dipping below $80,000 before recovering to around $80,200. This momentary drop wiped out nearly $63 million in crypto bets, with long positions accounting for $61 million, according to CoinGlass data.
