Bitcoin Underperforms Precious Metals as Safe-Haven Asset Debate Rages
Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, has challenged the notion that Bitcoin serves as a safe-haven asset or reliable store of value. In a recent X post, Brooks pointed out that since investment flows tied to debasement themes began in earnest, Bitcoin underperformed precious metals.
This underperformance, according to Brooks, is a key indicator that Bitcoin does not function as a hedge against fiat currency devaluation like gold and silver do. He emphasized that while this is partly a matter of perception, it is also reflected in actual price moves.
Brooks's comments come at a time when global investors are scrutinizing assets that can withstand inflationary pressures and currency depreciation. While Bitcoin proponents often refer to it as 'digital gold,' Brooks's analysis suggests that, in practice, it has not lived up to that moniker during periods of heightened debasement concerns.
