Bitcoin Volatility Sends Crypto Liquidations Soaring to $227 Million
Bitcoin's price continued to be volatile on Thursday, dipping below $63,000 for the first time in hours. The leading cryptocurrency had been trading between $63,300 and $63,500 earlier in the day before a brief surge pushed it to $63,900 around 1:25 a.m. EST.
However, this gain was short-lived, and Bitcoin began to decline again, falling to $62,912 at 12:44 p.m. This drop pushed its market capitalization down to $1.26 trillion, although it quickly recovered above $63,000.
The increased volatility on Thursday led to a surge in liquidations, with long positions accounting for nearly $34 million of the total $227 million lost across the broader crypto market.
According to AMINA Research, the monetary policy backdrop globally has grown less supportive of rate cuts as central banks shift toward holding rates steady or weighing further tightening. This is attributed to geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz driving temporary energy spikes and adding to inflationary risks.
