Bitcoin Volatility Surges as Fed Rate Hike Odds Climb to 60%
Bitcoin (BTC) prices have hovered around $80,000 as the Federal Reserve's rate hike odds surge to 60% following strong employment figures. The cryptocurrency momentarily reached a three-month high of $82,178 last Thursday but retreated after Friday's data release.
The robust employment numbers showed American businesses created 162,000 new positions in August, exceeding economist projections by nearly threefold. This has prompted market participants to reassess their expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate increase during the September 15-16 policy meeting.
However, elevated interest rates typically create headwinds for Bitcoin, amplifying the opportunity cost of holding assets with no yield and constraining overall liquidity conditions. The energy market is also contributing to market uncertainty, with Brent crude oil surging to $97 per barrel amid escalating U.S.-Iran geopolitical tensions.
Institutional appetite remains robust despite prevailing market pressures. American spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds attracted $1 billion in aggregate net inflows over the previous week, including $175 million on September 4.
