Bitcoin Wallet Security: A Cautionary Tale
A recent security breach of a Coldcard hardware wallet has led to a significant loss of Bitcoin worth approximately $38 million. The incident serves as a reminder that even seemingly secure wallets can be vulnerable to attack.
According to Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet, the reaction to this breach should not be to hastily adopt more complex security measures, but rather to carefully assess individual threat models and choose security solutions accordingly.
Gillemet points out that adding complexity to a wallet setup can introduce new risks, such as user error or lost hardware. He advocates for using Bitcoin Miniscript, which allows users to define advanced spending policies without the full complexity of traditional multisig.
Another alternative is MuSig2, a cryptographic standard supported by Ledger's clear signing feature and enabling users to verify every spending path before approval. Gillemet emphasizes that security choices should be based on an individual's actual threat model rather than reacting to the latest breach headlines.
