Bitcoin Wallets Surge as Coldcard Security Concerns Spark Rotation

A recent surge in new Bitcoin wallets has been reported by Santiment, with 2.27 million new addresses created in the week ending August 8.

This is the highest weekly total in 12 months and came alongside 751,000 active wallets during the same period, marking the strongest level of network activity recorded in the past 10 months.

The catalyst for this rotation was a security vulnerability associated with Coldcard hardware wallets, which led to users generating fresh wallets, sweeping funds to the new address, and figuring out the rest later.

Santiment analysts noted that spikes in wallet creation driven by security incidents don't necessarily signal weakness in the Bitcoin network itself, but rather a defensive shuffle from existing users.
