Bitcoin Whales Accumulate as Small Holders Reduce Positions Amid Coldcard Flaw
A flaw in the Coldcard hardware wallet has led to a divergence in Bitcoin holder flows. According to Santiment, wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC have accumulated 19,610 BTC since July 29, increasing their holdings by 0.14%. In contrast, wallets holding less than 0.01 BTC saw their holdings decline by 0.55% over the same period.
The root cause of this incident is a firmware bug that was left unpatched for five years. A code commit from March 1, 2021, shifted seed generation from hardware-based randomness to a software pseudo-random generator, reducing effective security strength to approximately 40 bits.
Block's engineering team and Coinkite jointly confirmed 4,585 affected wallets and $89 million in losses as of August 3. Despite the damage being relatively contained, the incident has shaken confidence in hardware wallets, leading small investors who were not directly affected to reduce their holdings.
Larger wallets have been absorbing the selling pressure, but the pace of vulnerability patch adoption and further forensic tracking of vulnerable addresses remains uncertain. This could influence future investor behavior, with periods of small-wallet selling potentially seeing increased exchange inflows or transfers to other wallet types.
