Bitcoin's 24.5% Surge Masks Underlying Market Fragility
August was a remarkable month for cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin (no ticker provided) experiencing one of its strongest monthly runs this year. The cryptocurrency closed August up 24.5%, but it's not just Bitcoin that saw significant gains. The combined market cap of the top-100 altcoins actually grew faster than Bitcoin, up 26.5% according to data from CryptoRank/X.
What's more, even smaller and mid-sized tokens weren't just riding Bitcoin's coattails. The average altcoin gained by 24.5%, while stripped of the outliers, these tokens were still up a solid 17.1%. This is a significant departure from previous months where larger tokens dominated the market.
Beyond just the prices, DeFi lending also had its own hero moment in August. Active loans across major protocols went up from $20.1B in June to $26.1B in August, growing by 30% in just two months! Aave [AAVE] alone made up more than half ($12.5B) of the total, with Morpho [MORPHO] and Spark [SPK] rounding out the next biggest slices.
