Bitcoin's 50-Week SMA: The Bull Market Tipping Point
Bitcoin's recent surge to $80,000 has investors wondering if the bear market is finally over. According to Galaxy Research, the key signal to watch for confirmation of a new bull market is whether Bitcoin can reclaim its 50-week simple moving average (SMA), currently hovering near $81,087.
Historical data suggests that in 11 out of 13 past bear markets, Bitcoin had already reached its cycle bottom by the time it closed above the 50-week SMA on a weekly basis. This makes reclaiming this level a strong potential signal of a trend reversal.
However, some analysts argue that the recent rally alone may not be enough to confirm the end of the bear market. Dan Tapiero of 50T Fund points out that Bitcoin has already pushed above its daily 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day moving averages, which could indicate that the cycle bottom is already in place.
While a weekly close above the 50-week SMA would provide a higher degree of confidence that the bear market has ended, investors should be prepared for potential volatility in the short term. A 25% seven-day rate of change is notable, but historical data suggests that such rapid advances are often followed by a period of consolidation or a pullback.
