Bitcoin's $80,000 Battle: Interest Rates vs Institutional Demand
Bitcoin's push above $81,000 has stalled as fears of higher US interest rates returned to market focus. The world's largest cryptocurrency had surged over 20% in a week, reaching its highest level since May, but fell back towards $78,000 after Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh reinforced the central bank's commitment to bringing inflation back to 2%. Warsh's comments sparked increased bets that the Fed could raise interest rates at its September meeting.
The move was felt across crypto-linked equities, with Coinbase and Galaxy Digital falling sharply. However, institutional demand remains a significant counterweight to macroeconomic pressure, with US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recording eight consecutive sessions of net inflows totalling around $2.8 billion.
Bitcoin now faces a technical test at the $80,000 level, which analysts identify as a major area of potential selling pressure. A sustained move above roughly $83,300 would provide stronger evidence that buyers are absorbing supply.
