Bitcoin's $82,470 Threshold: Will Reclaim Confirm End of Bear Market?
Bitcoin's current price is closely watched by traders due to its proximity to a key technical level. The 50-week moving average of Bitcoin, which lies near $82,470, has been identified as a crucial signal for assessing whether the current bear market has ended.
A study by Galaxy Research found that across six completed bear markets since 2011, Bitcoin reclaimed its 50-week moving average 13 times. Of these reclaims, 11 held without setting a lower closing low, indicating a strong recovery.
The research also compared the performance of the 50-week and 50-day moving averages as signals for a bear market's end. While the 50-day average provides quicker signals, it has been found to have more false starts, with only 11 successful reclaims out of 106 attempts.
Galaxy Research emphasized that a reclaim of the 50-week moving average is not a guarantee of a durable recovery, but rather a strong indication. The study noted that in three longer bear markets, the first successful 50-week reclaim arrived between 130 and 284 days after the low, with Bitcoin already having rallied between 63% and 80% by then.
Currently, Bitcoin's price is around $77,190, approximately 30% above its June 30 low. However, a weekly close above $82,000 would add significant weight to the argument that the June low marked the bottom of the bear market.
