Bitcoin's August Rally: A Strong Performance, but Can It Last?
Bitcoin's August rally marked its strongest performance since 2017, with a gain of approximately 24% by month's end. This surge comes after a difficult first half for the cryptocurrency, which fell to around $58,000 in July before recovering and breaking above $80,000.
The rally was accompanied by significant derivatives positioning, with around $9.71 billion in liquidations across two weeks, mostly from short positions. However, this does not necessarily indicate new spot demand driving the rally, as futures open interest measured in BTC had declined, and funding rates suggested some short covering contributed to the initial breakout.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw their strongest weekly inflow since October 2025, attracting around $1.92 billion during the five trading sessions through August 21. This renewed accumulation followed a period of heavy redemptions in May and June before investor demand recovered in August.
