Bitcoin's August Surge Sets Stage for September Showdown
Bitcoin's August surge of approximately 25% has left investors wondering what September will bring. The price climbed from $62,000 to briefly above $81,000 before settling near $78,000 by the end of the month.
The rally was fueled by a combination of policy catalysts and institutional demand. On August 19th, the US Treasury announced plans to at least double long-end bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion, while a new SEC framework for crypto assets and White House pressure to pass the CLARITY Act added to the bullish backdrop.
Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows reinforced this momentum, with net inflows reaching $1.92 billion during the week of August 17-21. The final week of August recorded about $924 million in net inflows, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust recording $938 million in inflows.
Despite the strong performance in August, September has historically been a challenging month for Bitcoin. According to CoinGlass, September has averaged negative 2.86% returns across most of its trading history. However, institutional demand through spot ETFs creates a structural buyer that did not exist before 2024, which may help mitigate this trend.
