Bitcoin's Borrowed Money Bubble Bursts Below $76,000
Bitcoin's rapid ascent to $80,000 came to an abrupt end, plummeting below $76,000 as the market struggled to cope with borrowed money.
The sudden reversal was triggered by a sharp rally in Bitcoin prices, which saw the cryptocurrency surge from around $64,551 on August 18 to over $77,000 by August 21, representing a weekly gain of more than 23%.
As traders piled into long positions built on borrowed money, betting on further price increases, they were left vulnerable to forced selling when Bitcoin stalled near $79,500 and slipped. Exchanges automatically closed losing bets, triggering a cascade of liquidations that pushed the price lower.
The total crypto market value fell from $2.68 trillion to $2.55 trillion in just six minutes, with 281,846 traders liquidated across 24 hours, resulting in about $1.71 billion in crypto positions wiped out.
