Bitcoin's Brief Soar Past $81,000 Sparks Doubts Over $100,000 Target
Bitcoin's recent surge to over $81,000 has sparked speculation about its potential to reach $100,000 by year-end. In just three days in August, Bitcoin soared by more than 20%, with prices briefly topping $81,000 before pulling back to $80,000.
The change in investor sentiment can be attributed to the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which shifted from 'fear' territory to 'extreme greed' in mid-August. This shift is largely due to President Donald Trump's support for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and his hint at the US government accumulating Bitcoin for the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.
The legislation aims to make it easier for individuals and institutions to buy, hold, and trade Bitcoin, removing regulatory gray areas around the cryptocurrency. However, some experts warn that nothing has fundamentally changed in the investment thesis for Bitcoin, with no major announcements about blockchain upgrades or halving events on the horizon.
Data from prediction markets on Kalshi suggests that traders give Bitcoin a 30% chance of ending the year between $80,000 and $100,000, with only a 25% chance of reaching above $100,000. This indicates that while Bitcoin may continue to rise, it's unlikely to hit $100,000 by year-end.
