Bitcoin's Bull Market Hopes Hang in Balance with 50-Week SMA
Bitcoin's recent surge to $80,000 has left many wondering if the prolonged bear market is finally coming to an end. However, analysts at Galaxy Research caution that a weekly close above the 50-week simple moving average (SMA) is necessary for confirmation.
The 50-week SMA is currently hovering near $81,087, and in 11 of the last 13 bear markets, Bitcoin had already reached its cycle bottom by the time it managed to close above this level. Galaxy Research notes that reclaiming the 50-week SMA has historically been a strong indicator of a trend reversal.
However, not all analysts agree on the significance of the 50-week SMA. Dan Tapiero of 50T Fund points out that Bitcoin has already reclaimed its daily moving averages, suggesting that the cycle bottom may have already occurred. Nevertheless, Galaxy Research emphasizes that a weekly close above the 50-week SMA is still necessary for confirmation.
The recent rally, which saw a 25% gain over the past week, is notable but not necessarily indicative of a new bull market. Historically, such rapid advances have been followed by periods of consolidation or pullback. Investors should be prepared for potential volatility in the short term, even if the longer-term outlook is improving.
