Bitcoin's Bulletin Board Effect: OP_RETURN Usage Surges Amid Runes Protocol Adoption
The Bitcoin network is experiencing a surge in OP_RETURN usage, with over 700,000 codes embedded into transactions. This mechanism allows users to embed arbitrary data into Bitcoin transactions, making the blockchain resemble a bulletin board more than a payment rail.
The increase is largely driven by protocols like Runes, which use OP_RETURN to inscribe token data directly onto Bitcoin's base layer. The recent surge in activity can be attributed to two key factors: the release of Bitcoin Core v30 and the adoption of the Runes protocol.
Bitcoin Core v30, released on October 10, 2025, loosened the rules for OP_RETURN usage, raising the default relay policy limit from 83 bytes to roughly 100 kilobytes. This is a more than 1,000x increase in capacity. Additionally, the update allowed multiple OP_RETURN outputs within a single transaction.
The Runes protocol has become the dominant consumer of this newly expanded capacity. A significant portion of recent OP_RETURN traffic can be traced back to Runes-related activity, with users minting and transferring fungible tokens that exist as data payloads on Bitcoin rather than on a separate chain.
