Bitcoin's 'Digital Gold' Moniker Fails to Resonate with Mainstream Investors
A decade-long campaign to promote Bitcoin as 'digital gold' has not yielded the expected results. A recent study by the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) suggests that this metaphor does not resonate with enough people to achieve mainstream adoption.
The survey, which involved 1,516 respondents in the US and eight in-person focus groups in Ohio and Tennessee, found that the 'digital gold' argument was not the most compelling one. Instead, themes such as control, proven performance, security, and ease of access emerged as stronger selling points.
The study identified a 'persuadable middle' segment consisting of 52% of respondents, who are either 'curious fence-sitters' (32%) or 'financially stressed disengaged' (20%). The researchers found that messages emphasizing these themes can increase interest in Bitcoin ownership among this group.
The study also highlighted the importance of trusted messengers in promoting Bitcoin adoption. Personal financial advisors, retirement planning experts, and friends or family members who already own Bitcoin were found to be more effective advocates than celebrity endorsements or influencer marketing.
