Bitcoin's 'Digital Gold' Status Under Threat: $10,000 Price Target Looms
Bloomberg Intelligence senior macro strategist Mike McGlone is sounding alarm bells for Bitcoin's price. According to his review, the leading cryptocurrency has lost its status as 'digital gold' and is now closely tied to the performance of U.S. equities.
The rigid correlation between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 has created critical downside signals for the asset, potentially sending it to a multiyear low of $10,000, McGlone warns. Three key factors contribute to this bearish outlook: a technical ceiling at $76,746 that failed to break above the psychological barrier of $80,000, rate hikes by the Federal Reserve draining liquidity from speculative markets, and Wall Street overheating with the S&P 500 moving critically far above its 200-week moving average.
McGlone emphasizes that Bitcoin's dependency on stocks is 'bad news' for investors. Over the past five years, its returns have matched those of the S&P 500 while exposing investors to nearly three times as much volatility. This makes the cryptocurrency an inefficient trade that undermines its status as a safe haven.
