The proof of work system adjusts mining difficulty in real-time to maintain consistent block times, even with changes in computing power. This ensures the network remains secure through the costs associated with energy consumption.
Despite its security benefits, some argue that proof of work has a significant environmental impact. As an alternative, proof of stake offers lower energy use but different tradeoffs, sparking debate about balancing security, decentralization, and environmental concerns.
