Bitcoin's Environmental Impact: A Nuanced View
Bitcoin's energy consumption has been criticized for its supposed negative impact on the environment. However, this narrative is overly simplistic and ignores important context. The truth is that more than half of Bitcoin's electricity now comes from renewable or nuclear sources.
A recent survey by Cambridge estimates that 52.4% of the electricity used by the network comes from sustainable sources, including 42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear. This means that a significant portion of the energy consumed by Bitcoin is not contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
Moreover, mining can also absorb power that might otherwise go unused and act as a flexible demand switch when grids are under stress. In fact, around 40% of Bitcoin's electricity would have been wasted without mining, including surplus hydropower, excess wind generation, and natural gas that would otherwise have been burned into the atmosphere.
The system is becoming more efficient by design. Between 2021 and 2025, the network's computing power increased roughly sixfold while electricity consumption only doubled. This means that Bitcoin now produces around three times more computing power for each unit of electricity it uses.
