Bitcoin's Four-Year Cycle May Be Replaced by Six-to-Eight Year Debt Cycle, Willy Woo Suggests

Popular on-chain analyst Willy Woo suggests that Bitcoin's traditional four-year price cycle may be giving way to a longer cycle influenced by debt and liquidity conditions.

The four-year cycle has been a cornerstone of Bitcoin's price movements, with each halving event - occurring approximately every four years - prompting significant price swings. However, in recent times, this pattern has shown signs of weakening.

According to Woo, the diminishing supply shock from halvings is no longer a dominant factor in determining Bitcoin's price cycle. The latest halving in April 2024 reduced new BTC issuance to around 0.8% of existing supply per year, and the next event in early 2028 will further decrease this figure to approximately 0.4%. Woo argues that this diminished impact on market dynamics means the traditional four-year cycle may no longer be relevant.

Instead, Woo suggests that Bitcoin's price movements are increasingly influenced by six-to-eight-year short-term debt cycles similar to those seen in traditional financial markets. This shift is driven by the growing presence of institutional investors and the increasing significance of TradFi market conditions on cryptocurrency markets.

While some analysts, such as Galaxy Research, disagree with Woo's assessment, arguing that the four-year cycle remains visible in data, others like Arthur Hayes have also questioned the validity of this traditional framework.
