Bitcoin's Gold Connection Grows Stronger Amid Fiat Currency Worries
Grayscale's research arm has observed a significant shift in Bitcoin's correlation with gold. According to Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale, Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold rose from near zero at the start of the year to above 50%. Meanwhile, its correlation with the Nasdaq 100 slipped from more than 60% to roughly 33% over the same period.
This shift may reflect renewed investor focus on Bitcoin's scarcity, monetary independence, and role as a store of value. Pandl stated that 'Bitcoin can serve as a scarce, liquid alternative alongside gold' as investors reassess the long-term purchasing power of fiat currencies.
The debasement trade refers to the argument that hard, supply-capped assets tend to appreciate as fiat currencies lose purchasing power over time. With US federal debt having passed $40 trillion, Pandl argued that Bitcoin and other scarce digital assets may be entering a more favorable market regime under these conditions.
