Bitcoin's Institutional Shift: Two Forks Coming in August
Bitcoin is poised to undergo two forks in August, but this time it's different. For the first time, most of Bitcoin's economic weight sits in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and custodians that have contractually opted out of participating in these events.
The first fork, BIP-110, is a contested soft fork that aims to restrict certain ways of embedding arbitrary data into Bitcoin transactions. However, its activation window is approaching with low miner support, which increases the risk of a temporary or lasting chain split.
The second fork, eCash, is a planned hard fork led by Paul Sztorc that will distribute new tokens one-to-one to Bitcoin holders at the snapshot around block 964,000. But for most institutional investors, this means nothing, as they have already decided not to participate.
For individual holders, it's essential to know where their coins live and check their provider's policy before the snapshot. If you self-custody, wait for verified wallet support and replay protection before touching anything.
