Bitcoin's Korea Discount Narrows Amid Modest Recovery
The reverse kimchi premium for Bitcoin has narrowed to -0.34% on South Korean exchanges compared to global platforms, indicating a modest recovery in local demand.
As of August 20, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading at 91.19 million won on Upbit, the country's dominant crypto exchange, which is up 0.29% from the previous session. On Binance, the global benchmark, BTC was priced at the equivalent of 91.51 million won, leaving a negative price gap of 320,000 won.
The kimchi premium has historically been a barometer of retail investor sentiment in South Korea, and the current negative readings indicate that Korean investors are either less enthusiastic or facing selling pressures.
The narrowing discount from August 19 to August 20 could reflect several factors, including increased local buying interest, reduced selling pressure, or simply price convergence as arbitrageurs exploit the gap.
