Bitcoin's Net-Zero Returns Stun Long-Term Holders

Bitcoin's transition from a high-growth speculative asset to a macro-sensitive investment has left many of its long-term holders disappointed. The cryptocurrency, which was initially envisioned as a peer-to-peer electronic payment system and later rebranded as 'digital gold,' has delivered net-zero returns since late 2021.

Looking at the long-term price action, Bitcoin has indeed functioned as a store of value in an unexpected way: it has maintained its price level around $64,000 for nearly two years. During that span, the asset experienced massive drawdowns and speculative surges, but ultimately failed to provide significant returns.

The launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs and futures products brought institutional capital into the market, but also bound Bitcoin to traditional macro forces. As a result, prices are now locked into wider macro trading ranges, capping long-term directional momentum.
