Bitcoin's Oldest Holders Surge Spending Amid Price Consolidation
Bitcoin's oldest holders have increased their spending activity in recent months, with the 90-day average of spent outputs from this cohort reaching approximately 1,500 BTC. This marks a doubling of their previous level of activity, which peaked at around 962 BTC on June 24.
This surge in spending activity among Bitcoin's oldest holders comes as the cryptocurrency continues to trade within a tight range, with prices hovering near $79,600 over the past day. Despite this price stability, analysts are cautioning against reading too much into these numbers, noting that spent UTXOs (unspent transaction outputs) do not necessarily confirm sales.
Darkfost, a CryptoQuant analyst, pointed out that some of the increased activity may be attributed to holders moving their coins to safer storage after the Coldcard security incident. This incident led to a significant increase in network activity in early August, with nearly 890,000 BTC moving over seven days.
Some of this activity may also be related to wallet consolidation or seed migration, rather than actual sales. The analyst emphasized that spent UTXOs do not provide conclusive evidence of selling, and that further analysis is needed to determine the true nature of these transactions.
