Bitcoin's Price Rally Falters Amid Inflation Worries and AI Bubble Fears

In late February, Bitcoin's price surged 5% to nearly $70,000 after the Iran conflict broke out. This led some to believe that BTC had finally decoupled from high-growth tech stocks, as its correlation with the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) declined to 0.13 compared to 1.0 in early February.

However, this trend proved short-lived, and by late June, Bitcoin's price had declined to around $60,000, pacing losses across big tech amid worries about higher inflation and fresh AI bubble fears.

Crypto analyst Joseph Schuster noted that despite the price movements, the CME CF Bitcoin Volatility Index reached its 2026 low in early August, indicating a decrease in market expectations of 30-day volatility. ETFs are also struggling, with BlackRock's new BITA fund paying BTC dividends failing to take off as expected.

The launch of 24/7 trading across CME Group's suite of Crypto futures and options, which includes Bitcoin, Ether (ETH-USD), Solana (SOL-USD), XRP (XRP-USD) and more, aims to provide market participants with a continuous option to manage cryptocurrency risks.

Looking medium to long term, several factors could bolster Bitcoin, including expectations that institutional investors will continue to buy it as a hedge against sovereign debt and currency debasement risk. Analysts also point to the potential for network improvements to deepen the coin's appeal as a peer-to-peer payment alternative.
