Bitcoin's Price Stability Fails to Spark Altcoin Rally
The stability of Bitcoin's price above $58,000 since June 1 has not yet led to a broader rally in altcoins. According to Moomoo, only 29 out of the top 100 coins are trading above their respective 50-day averages, with Bitcoin and Ethereum being among them. This is a bearish sign for the market as it indicates that the stability seen in Bitcoin's price has not yet spilled over into other cryptocurrencies.
The 50-day simple moving average (SMA) is widely tracked as a near-term trend gauge, with price breaks above this level indicating bullish momentum. However, the current market conditions suggest that this momentum is limited to just a few coins. In comparison, 47 stocks from the Nasdaq 100 index are trading above their 50-day SMAs, highlighting the disparity between the two markets.
The Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision due on Wednesday could have a significant impact on the market. Analysts at Ebury believe that the bar for a hawkish surprise that meaningfully boosts the dollar is high, and that this could drive Bitcoin prices lower. Meanwhile, experts at Marex note that U.S. core PCE inflation and GDP data due later this week could also breed volatility.
