Bitcoin's Price Surge Masks Its Fundamental Worth

Bitcoin's recent price surge has put an end to its summer stagnation, but it still hasn't justified its existence as a decentralized currency. The 23% jump was largely due to Bitcoin's role in the 'dollar debasement' trade, where investors turn to alternative assets when worried about America's heavy borrowing and eccentric policymaking.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's plan to boost bond buybacks contributed to this trend, but it won't return the market to genuinely bullish territory. The experience of October's brutal Bitcoin sell-off shows why narratives about what powers its value often fail to stick.

Some traders have touted crypto as an effective dollar hedge alongside gold, but that idea was put to rest in October when Bitcoin slumped 12% after US President Donald Trump renewed tariff threats against China. Gold, on the other hand, rose to a record high.

Bitcoin has long been in search of an established story to show it has fundamental worth and isn't just a pure speculative asset. Its digital version of gold narrative hasn't borne much fruit this year, with gold up 7% and Bitcoin down nearly 10%. The recent jump where both rose handsomely was largely due to traders who had been betting on the price falling.

Michael Saylor, a leading Bitcoin bull, urged traders to buy more of the digital currency during the spike while refraining from adding to his company's own stash. Favourable regulation is another popular tale used to console Bitcoin fans, but even this remains uncertain with the US Clarity Act stalled in Congress.
