Bitcoin's Price Surge Sparks Capital Gains Tax Debate

The recent 22% weekly price increase of Bitcoin has sparked debate among investors about whether they should pay capital gains tax on nominal gains.

In the US, the Treasury Department's Capital Gains Indexing Authority has unclear rules regarding this issue.

Bitcoin investors are still liable to pay taxes on nominal gains, even if the asset's value hasn't changed internally. This is because the price increase was largely due to the dollar's weakness, not an improvement in Bitcoin itself.

Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, warns that this 'inflation tax' burdens individuals who own cryptocurrency or other assets with a nominal gain, rather than actual wealth creation.
