Bitcoin's Price Surges to New Heights on Short Squeeze
Bitcoin's price surged nearly 7% to around $72,500 after a short squeeze pushed the cryptocurrency above $69,000 on Wednesday. The move was fueled by the liquidation of approximately $500 million worth of short positions, which forced traders to buy Bitcoin and accelerate the rally.
Glassnode co-founder Rafael Schultze-Kraft noted that similar breakouts have historically preceded gains of nearly 85% over six months. However, prediction markets suggest that traders remain cautious about the cryptocurrency's next move.
The Treasury's announcement that it would expand long-term bond buybacks briefly pushed yields lower and lifted risk assets, including Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) and Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN), which also climbed in price.
Glassnode said that the current breakout is different from previous ones due to its volatility-adjusted advance. The move measured 5.8 times Bitcoin's typical daily volatility over the preceding month, making it the strongest such advance since October 2023.
Schultze-Kraft pointed out that Bitcoin has recorded just 14 upside moves exceeding five sigma since 2013. Six previous cases emerged from similarly subdued volatility and delivered median returns of 11.8% after one month and 84.8% after six months.
