Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Threat: Experts Weigh in on Q-Day
Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat, has raised concerns about Bitcoin's vulnerability to quantum computing threats. He believes that private keys could be exposed in as little as nine minutes due to a lack of consensus on how to prevent 'Q-Day'. This refers to the hypothetical moment when a quantum computer is capable of breaking through current encryption methods.
Ethereum and Solana, on the other hand, are actively developing quantum resistance. However, Lee thinks that these networks will not be significantly impacted by quantum computing. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna predicts that quantum computing will start to affect revenue by 2028 or 2029.
Jameson Lopp, co-founder and chief security officer at Casa, estimates a 'greater than 50% chance' that a truly threatening quantum computer remains a decade away. However, the potential for rapid key derivation remains a serious concern. This extended disruption poses a significant problem for Bitcoin, which prioritizes continuous operation.
