Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Threat: New Developments Dim Its Likelihood
Bitcoin's security against quantum computers has been debated in recent years. The worry is that quantum computers could potentially crack Bitcoin's private keys, but new developments suggest this threat may be overblown.
Data scientists have developed new mathematical locks through the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 360, which can't be broken by even quantum computers. These new locks will require more computing power than Bitcoin's current encryption, so to prevent a slowdown in transactions, developers will use tools like zero-knowledge proofs to compress hundreds of signatures into one package.
Another step is to give users up to five years to migrate their Bitcoins to the new BIP-360 addresses before freezing all old addresses. This means that by the time quantum computers can reverse-engineer public keys, they will either be hidden or frozen.
