Bitcoin's Quantum-Resistant Leap Exposes 7 Million Coins at Risk
The first-ever quantum-resistant transaction has been successfully processed on the Bitcoin mainnet. The transaction was carried out by StarkWare, which developed the Ethereum layer-two network Starknet. This achievement demonstrates that advanced cryptographic techniques can be integrated into the Bitcoin network to withstand potential attacks from quantum computers.
However, this milestone also highlights a significant remaining risk: approximately 7 million Bitcoin, whose public keys have already been exposed, could still be vulnerable to future quantum computing attacks. These coins have public keys that have been exposed on the blockchain, meaning a quantum computer could theoretically derive the private keys and steal them.
The transaction used a novel signature scheme that is resistant to quantum threats, executed directly on the Bitcoin network without a soft fork or consensus change. While this method has not yet been standardized by the broader blockchain community, it serves as a technical proof of concept for future upgrades.
