Bitcoin's Sizing Question: How Much Can You Survive Holding?
Investors often frame their decision to include Bitcoin in a balanced portfolio as a binary choice. However, a more practical approach concerns dosage and implementation: how much Bitcoin can be safely held and under what rules.
Lionsoul Global's chief investment officer, Gregory Mall, conducted an experiment to test this directly. He started with a conventional 60/40 portfolio of global equities and core bonds and introduced spot Bitcoin at 2.5% and 10% weights with monthly rebalancing from January 2021 to March 2026.
The results showed that adding Bitcoin lifted returns and Sharpe ratios in strong crypto years, while the traditional core cushioned weaker ones. A small sleeve changed the shape of outcomes without altering the portfolio's identity.
Mall then repeated the exercise with a rules-based trend sleeve in place of spot Bitcoin, which toggled between Bitcoin and cash on trend signals. This version moderated extreme years in both directions and landed between the plain 60/40 and the spot mix on risk and return.
