On August 2016, Ilya Lichtenstein bypassed BitGo's multi-signature security to steal 119,754 BTC from Bitfinex. The theft cost the exchange $72 million at the time and accounted for a 36% reduction in customers' account balances.

Lichtenstein authorized 2,075 transactions to transfer the stolen funds to his wallets, using various darknet markets and mixers to obscure the trail. He also created fictitious identities to open accounts on other exchanges and converted some of the assets into gold coins.

The stolen bitcoin value dipped to $58 million after the price plunged 20% following the breach, but investigators later recovered a significant portion of the funds. The FBI and IRS-CI spent millions on blockchain analysis tools, resulting in the largest seizure in US history with the recovery of 94,643 BTC.
