Bitget Exits Japan Amid Ongoing Compliance Issues

Share

Bitget has announced it will stop offering services to residents of Japan. The decision comes after years of warnings from the Financial Services Agency (FSA). In a notification, Bitget said that new account registrations from Japan would no longer be accepted as of August 3. Existing accounts flagged as belonging to Japanese residents who haven't completed Level 2 identity verification by November 1 will automatically be classified as such and restricted.

Bitget's relationship with the FSA dates back to 2023, when it was first warned for operating an unregistered crypto exchange business under Japan's Payment Services Act. The agency issued another warning in 2024 and requested that Apple and Google remove Bitget's app from their stores in February 2025.

Bitget has not secured registration or resolved the underlying issue despite these warnings. Other exchanges, such as Bybit, have faced similar restrictions before eventually shutting down entirely.
