Bitget Exits Japan Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
Bitget, a cryptocurrency exchange, has announced its decision to stop serving customers in Japan. The company will close all open trading positions by December 31, 2026, after setting a deadline of August 2, 2026, for users to exit the platform.
The move comes after Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) warned Bitget in 2023 and 2024 over unregistered operations targeting Japanese residents. The exchange had been offering derivatives trading and copy-trading tools on its platform.
Bitget will force-close all Japan positions by December 31, 2026, per an August 2 notice. The company disclosed the phased shutdown in official notices posted August 2, 2026. As of August 3, Japanese residents can no longer open new accounts on the platform.
The decision reflects Bitget's 'ongoing commitment to regulatory compliance' in Japan, according to the exchange. The shutdown will happen in stages, with flagged accounts moving into 'Close-Only' mode starting November 1, where users cannot open new trades but can still withdraw funds.
