Bitget Wallet Sees Stablecoin Success Hinging on Local Payment Systems
Bitget Wallet's Head of APAC Will Wu recently spoke at FUTUREMODE 2026 about the future of stablecoins in Asia. He emphasized that the region's adoption will be driven by how easily digital dollars connect to local currencies and payment systems.
The current challenge is making stablecoins work locally, as opposed to just facilitating global transactions. According to Wu, users should be able to hold their preferred currency while paying merchants in local currency without manual conversion. This requires more than fast blockchain settlement; it needs integration with local currency conversion, merchant acceptance, regulatory compliance, and familiar payment rails.
Bitget Wallet is building towards this model through its Onchain Payments Matrix, a layer connecting stablecoin issuers with card networks, QR payment systems, on- and off-ramp providers, and local financial rails. Wu predicts that by 2027, Asia's winning model will be a wallet-led experience connecting global stablecoin liquidity with local payment systems.
He emphasized that the real measure of success will be whether people can use stablecoins repeatedly in everyday life, not just how many new tokens are issued.
