BitGo Locks into Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol for WBTC
BitGo has chosen Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as its exclusive bridge technology for Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), a move that gives Chainlink control over how billions in value flow through DeFi.
The decision follows Coinbase's selection of CCIP as the bridging solution for its own wrapped Bitcoin product, cbBTC. This marks a trend towards industry consolidation around a single interoperability stack.
Chainlink's CCIP acts as a messaging layer that enables secure token movement between different blockchain networks. For WBTC, it currently supports two operational modes: lock and release on Ethereum, and burn and mint on Ronin.
The partnership simplifies BitGo's technical architecture but also concentrates risk in one protocol. This raises concerns about the security of WBTC, which remains a crucial token for decentralized finance due to its ability to bring Bitcoin liquidity into DeFi without requiring a sale.
