Bitgo Shifts WBTC Infrastructure to Chainlink for Enhanced Security
Bitgo has announced that it will shift its Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) infrastructure to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), a move aimed at enhancing security and reducing risks in cross-chain transactions.
The decision, which affects all future Bitgo-issued digital assets, creates a single framework for transferring assets between blockchains while applying the same security controls and operating standards across supported networks.
Bitgo cited several factors behind its decision, including Chainlink's security architecture, institutional compliance standards, and built-in risk controls. The protocol supports issuer-controlled transfer limits and configurable transaction controls, which can function as automated safeguards by slowing or restricting transfers if suspicious activity is detected.
The shift is significant, as it adds one of the industry's largest wrapped bitcoin products to Chainlink's network, which has supported over $32 trillion in transaction value and secures more than $110 billion across cross-chain applications and DeFi. The company plans to use the Chainlink Cross-Chain Token standard to establish unified versions of WBTC across supported blockchains.
