Bithumb Earnings Plummet as Investors Flee Crypto for AI Stocks
Bithumb's second-quarter earnings report reveals a significant decline in revenue and operating profit. The South Korean cryptocurrency exchange reported an operating profit of 12.1 billion won (approximately $9 million) for the quarter ended June 30, down from 21.5 billion won a year earlier, representing a 44% drop.
The exchange attributed the downturn to the prolonged hawkish stance by the U.S. Federal Reserve, which kept interest rates elevated and reduced appetite for risk assets like cryptocurrencies. Additionally, domestic and international investors increasingly moved capital into equities, particularly technology stocks tied to artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
Bithumb's market position and challenges have been well-documented in recent years. The exchange has faced regulatory scrutiny and internal turmoil, including leadership changes and legal issues involving former executives. Despite these challenges, it has maintained a significant user base, though its market share has fluctuated.
