Bithumb Targets 2028 IPO Amid South Korea's Crypto Regulatory Crackdown
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has announced its intention to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) by 2028. This move marks a significant step for the South Korean crypto industry, which has faced increased regulatory scrutiny and market volatility in recent years.
Bithumb plans to strengthen internal controls and adopt K-IFRS accounting standards this year, followed by filing for a preliminary listing review next year. The exchange aims to enhance financial transparency and align with global accounting norms, a critical factor for institutional investors and regulatory approval.
The IPO plan is seen as a strategic pivot toward mainstream financial integration and could set a precedent for other regional exchanges. If successful, Bithumb would become one of the first major crypto exchanges in Asia to complete a public listing, following Coinbase's direct listing in the U.S. in 2021.
