Bitkey Unveils Emergency Exit Kit for Bitcoin Fund Recovery Without App Access
Bitkey, the Bitcoin hardware wallet developed by Block Inc., has introduced an innovative feature called the Emergency Exit Kit. This kit enables users to transfer their funds without relying on Block's servers or app.
The Emergency Exit Kit uses a 2-of-3 multisig architecture, where three keys exist but only two are needed for authorization. The user holds two of these keys: an App Key (stored on their phone) and a Hardware Key (stored on the physical Bitkey device). Block Inc. retains the third key.
Normally, the App Key and Block's server key handle routine transactions, while the hardware device intervenes for higher-security operations. However, the Emergency Exit Kit reverses this model in worst-case scenarios.
During initial wallet setup, Bitkey generates an encrypted version of the App Key as a PDF, which is saved to the user's iCloud Drive or Google Drive. This PDF, combined with the physical Hardware Key, forms the Emergency Exit Kit. Together, they provide both keys needed for signing transactions, bypassing Block entirely.
Using the kit requires sideloading an open-source utility tool onto an NFC-compatible Android device. Users tap their Hardware Key via NFC to decrypt the App Key from the stored PDF, allowing them to move their Bitcoin to any address without involving Block's servers or app store downloads.
