BitMEX Closure Won't Mirror FTX Implosion, Experts Say
BitMEX, a pioneering exchange in crypto derivatives, has announced its shutdown after 11 years of operation. Founded by Arthur Hayes in 2014, BitMEX is known for introducing the 100x-leverage perpetual swap, which later became the dominant product in the space.
The closure comes as no surprise given the challenges faced by smaller exchanges like BitMart, another top-10 exchange that has also ceased trading. The last major CEX to shut down was FTX in November 2022, but its collapse led to a chaotic bank run and years of recovery efforts.
However, analysts believe that the BitMEX wind-down will not mirror the FTX implosion. Unlike FTX, which relied on the illiquid FTT token and had been misappropriating customer funds for months, BitMEX's shutdown is more contained due to its $270 million insurance fund.
XWIN Japan notes that these closures are part of a broader industry consolidation trend, where smaller exchanges struggle to compete with larger ones that meet institutional standards. The rising Binance BTC reserve indicates that liquidity is migrating to the largest exchanges left standing.
