BitMEX Delists 65 Trading Pairs Amid Exchange Shutdown
BitMEX has accelerated its delisting of derivative contracts and trading pairs in July due to 'insufficient trading interest,' amid the exchange's decision to wind down. The platform has removed a total of 65 derivative contracts and trading pairs in July, compared with just 19 across the first six months of the year.
The delistings occurred over several dates in early and mid-July, with BitMEX initially removing 21 derivative contracts on its website. Two weeks later, nine spot pairs were delisted for lack of trading interest. On Thursday, an additional 35 derivative contracts were added to the queue for delisting.
BitMEX attributed the delistings to 'insufficient trading interest in these contracts and the closure of the BitMEX exchange.' The platform will cease exchange services on September 23, 2026, at 4:00 am UTC, following a 'strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry.'
Cryptocurrency expert Roshan Dharia pointed out that BitMEX's demise reflects structural pressures facing mid-sized centralized exchanges. He noted that liquidity has increasingly concentrated among the industry's largest players and regulatory compliance costs continue to rise.
