BitMEX Delists 65 Trading Pairs Amid Exchange Shutdown
BitMEX has accelerated its delisting of derivative contracts and trading pairs, citing 'insufficient trading interest' as the reason. The exchange has delisted a total of 65 trading pairs in July, including 21 derivative contracts in early July and nine spot pairs two weeks later. In addition, BitMEX added another 35 derivative contracts to the list for delisting on Thursday.
The delistings come as the exchange is set to cease operations on September 23, 2026. According to a statement from BitMEX, the decision to close was made after a 'strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry.' The exact reason for the closure remains unclear.
Roshan Dharia, a restructuring adviser, spoke to Cointelegraph about the exchange's demise. According to Dharia, the decline of BitMEX reflects structural pressures facing mid-sized centralized exchanges, where liquidity has increasingly concentrated among the industry's largest players and regulatory compliance costs continue to rise.
