BitMEX Enters Close-Only Risk-Limit Mode Ahead of Shutdown

Share

BitMEX will enter close-only risk-limit mode on August 26 at 04:00 UTC, according to its official notice. This is part of the exchange's planned wind-down, which will see trading services permanently cease on September 23 at 04:00 UTC.

The strict risk-limit phase aims to prevent new risk from being added while giving users time to reduce their exposure. This helps the platform manage open interest, margin, liquidation risk, and settlement obligations before the final shutdown date.

BitMEX has a significant place in crypto market history as one of the most influential derivatives platforms. Its perpetual swap products, leverage culture, and trader community helped shape how crypto derivatives developed.

The exchange's wind-down carries symbolic weight, showing how much the market has changed since its peak. Competition has intensified, regulatory expectations are higher, and liquidity has spread across centralized exchanges, decentralized perpetuals platforms, and regulated futures venues.
