BitMEX Exchange Announces September 2026 Shutdown After 11-Year Run
The cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, BitMEX, has announced that it will shut down its operations on September 23, 2026. The decision comes after an 11-year run and a strategic review by its parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited.
In July alone, BitMEX delisted 65 derivative contracts and trading pairs due to 'insufficient trading interest.' The exchange's daily trading volumes once reached $8 billion in July 2018, with turnover surpassing 1 million Bitcoin in a single day. At its peak in 2019, it handled over $1 trillion in annual trading volume and held about 57% of the global crypto derivatives market.
Users who leave funds on the platform after the shutdown date will face automatic penalties, including a $50 monthly maintenance fee or an annualized 1% levy on remaining assets. The company's proof of reserves shows that platform liabilities are fully covered by customer assets.
